IAA Announces New Leadership
Longtime president and CEO Lynne Petersen to retire, Brian Spaulding named successor
INDIANAPOLIS – After 35 years of selfless service and unwavering commitment to the multifamily industry, Indiana Apartment Association (IAA) announces the retirement of its longtime president and CEO, Lynne Petersen, effective November 30. Petersen, who has served in every role at the association during her tenure, including 25 years as IAA’s president and CEO, has led the organization with vision and commitment, leaving behind a legacy of growth, innovation and advocacy for Indiana’s multifamily industry. Petersen will continue to serve as a senior advisor in 2025 to aid IAA during the leadership transition.
During her tenure, Petersen championed numerous initiatives that strengthened the IAA's role as a leader in the multifamily housing industry. Under her guidance, the association grew its membership, expanded educational opportunities and played a critical role in advancing legislation to support the industry.
During this year’s IAA annual Midwest Multifamily Conference awards ceremony, Petersen was honored as the first-ever recipient of the Lynne Petersen Advocate of the Year Award. The board created this recognition in her honor, and it celebrates outstanding advocates who demonstrate dedication, selflessness, passion, and service to advance the multifamily housing industry.
"It has been an incredible privilege to lead the Indiana Apartment Association and work alongside so many talented professionals dedicated to enhancing housing opportunities across our state," Petersen said. "I am proud of what we have achieved together and confident in the bright future ahead under new leadership."
“In this era, finding someone who dedicates their career to an organization for 35 years is increasingly rare,” says Chair of the Board, Sandy Carmin. “On behalf of IAA’s board of directors, we are forever grateful for Lynne’s service to our industry, and we look forward to Brian’s leadership.”
Spaulding will assume the role of president and CEO starting December 1. Spaulding has mainly served as IAA’s vice president of government affairs and brings a wealth of experience in association management, legal expertise and advocacy. His leadership and vision will build upon Petersen’s impactful work, ensuring the IAA continues to thrive and serve its members.
Prior to joining IAA in 2019, Spaulding served as field representative, communications director, general counsel, district director and deputy chief of staff for Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02). Spaulding has a bachelor’s from Purdue University, a juris doctorate from Michigan State University and he is a licensed attorney in Indiana and Michigan.
"I am grateful to IAA’s executive committee and IAA’s board of directors for the opportunity to serve as the next President and CEO,” says Spaulding. “I am appreciative and inspired by the remarkable job and legacy Lynne leaves behind after 35 years of service.”
