The purpose of IAA: Merrillville is to promote, advise, and protect the general interest of the construction, ownership, and management of multi-family housing by engaging and uniting industry members through informative and engaging educational and networking events.

Disaster Preparedness: Taking the Initiative

The purpose of this course is to prepare both multifamily and commercial property staff members for natural disasters and common emergencies that can happen on site and how to handle the aftermath, when to handle responses in-house and when to call in the experts. This interactive course is targeted toward property managers, assistant property managers, maintenance, and engineers.

Learn more on how to respond to common disasters, including:

  • Fire disaster recovery, the staff role, how to build an emergency kit, securing the property in the immediate aftermath, working with a restoration company, tenant management, insurance, and longer-term reconstruction needs
  • Water damage statistics, liability from the property and tenant perspectives, damage categories and classes, assessing the issue, and how to respond and dry out

Fair Housing mistakes can be costly. Many of the common complaints are avoidable if personnel is knowledgeable and well trained. This course reviews basics of all appliance repairs.  Refrigerator, electric stove, and dishwasher repair are the main aspects to be discussed. This class will review parts, questions to ask residents to accurately assess the situation, what to do if the appliance is under warranty, and solutions to solve most common problems. This class is suited for entry to mid-level technicians.

Active Shooter Training

The Indiana State Police, with the assistance of school safety liaison Dr. Richard Hogue, has created a presentation providing key steps to follow should one encounter an active shooter. Incorporating a City of Houston Mayor’s Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security video called “Run. Hide. Fight.” into the training aids, this session will assist businesses and other organizations in preparing to respond to the unpredictable possibility of an active shooter event.

This education session includes a screening of the video, best practices for safeguarding oneself and others in the event of an active shooter, and a question and answer session.

Plumbing 101

Servicing common plumbing products is a key function of every multifamily property. This course will provide information on how to repair and install a toilet and show differences in toilet sizing. Faucet installation and repair will be explained, from the kitchen faucet to lavatory and tub/shower, and an overview of typical configurations and how to repair waterlines will be given. The final section of this course will be one of water heater service and repair.

Attend this sessions to learn about:

  • Water closet (toilet) installation and service, including flush valves
  • Drainage repairs, including P traps, S traps, and service drains
  • Water piping repair
  • Basic water heater repairs
